Caffe Florian, Venice

on
March 26, 2013

I’ve heard about this cafe place last year when getting ready to visit Venice with my friend, Kleo. It has been permanently opened since 1720, one of the oldest cafe places in the world and the oldest in Italy. It is located in Piazza San Marco, a special place.

Last Saturday, I’ve been here with my husband, after hardly getting through the visitors
crowd, came here especially for Easter, so we decided to spoil ourselves. Because only for the posh experience you should drink your coffee here. It is special, makes you feel contemporary with all the artists that landed here hundreds years ago. It has many chambers with a baroque decor, a museum air all around, waiters dressed in white uniforms with gloves, I was missing a corset dress and a feathers hat and I would’ve felt exactly in those times.

We’ve been woken up by the menu. It actually knocks you out with the astronomic prices. But for the entire experience, it’s worth it. We settled inside, even if outside the tables were really elegant and an orchestra was playing. But it costs 6 euros per person to seat outside, like you can’t hear them playing from inside. We ordered a glass of red wine, a latte and a tiramisu. They brought us all on a silver plate, accompanied by a water carafe and chips.

I was really impressed with the cutlery and silver pots, I’ve always wanted those and one day I should have them.

Tiramisu was good, even if I don’t fancy an intense taste of mascarpone, but you could feel the fine quality of ingredients.

You’re being transported in a different century, the time barely flows, you start to notice the tailcoat waiters, extremely classic, servile, the care free clients on other tables and right when you found a way to avoid all the blitz from curious tourists, you need to use the restroom. Surprise, you have to pay. I mean, not like the bill isn’t incredibly high, but you have to pay even for their toilet? It is not mandatory, but there is a lady there with a cruel eye. I avoid her glance and mind my own business.

If you want to be spoiled in Venice, I recommend this place. It is an unique experience, even if I’ve been here a few times. It is expensive, but what’s cheap in Venice? After all, it is one of the oldest cafe places in the world and I rather be treated as a queen here than as a beggar in other cafes.
