Gingham and pastels

There is something about re-purposing vintage trends that got me hooked into trying this outfit today. We have on one hand the gingham prints, and pastels on the other.

“Textile historians tend to disagree on the origins of the term ‘gingham’. The most popular theory is that it is an Indonesian term – “Ging-gang” means striped in Bahasa, a fact that may surprise those who know classic gingham as a checked fabric. When it was first introduced to the mills of Britain, back in the seventeenth century, gingham was very much a design of stripes – it was only later that it evolved into the distinctive checks that we recognise today. Gingham may have been born in the Far East, but it grew up in Britain. Its importance was huge in the Lancashire cotton mills during the Industrial Revolution, and during the period when we shipped tons of materials to the American colonies.”

Charles Tyrwhitt has done its homework on gingham, right? Well, I love this print, it is classic, evergreen and suits all your sartorial needs. Dorothy Perkins has reinvented the cropped trousers in navy & white gingham and as one of the season’s must-have pieces, this item is a style hero. You’ll see it a lot in my next #ootds, just a small warning.

Another favorite of mine, pastels are hotter than ever for spring, and they are not just for girly looks or Easter bunnies. They suit sporty, preppy, glam outfits just as any other strong colours, and you can make the season’s cotton candy colours work for your style. In this particular case, I have opted for a white jacket accessorized with a baby pink mini bag, another hot trend this season, and nude kitten sandals, for that classic-relaxed look. As to jewelry, the less, the better. Statement pieces such as this fabulous pearls bracelet, and a Rajasthan Garnet and white topaz ring are all you need. You can wear this look at a brunch with your mom, or on a casual meeting with your PR. What matters is to enjoy the first rays of sun with your smile on!
