Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa, Berkshire

Last month I decided to treat my sister in law with a weekend off, away from our usual busy lives with kids, work and all that comes in between. What better escape than spending time at the spa, getting some long needed pampering and indulge in a delicious dinner? With all this in mind, we ended up going to Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa, in Berkshire. Surrounded by a stunning parkland, the place is really an oasis of relaxation.

The staff was really friendly the moment we walked in. We arrived fairly early, so we had to wait a little bit for our room to be ready, thus we got to explore the hotel. Designed elegantly as a sanctuary, there are more than 100 rooms with comfortable beds, really spacious bathrooms, ideal for relaxation.

Home to a 18m swimming pool, the spa at Donnington is great! We got to spend a lot of time in the steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room and jacuzzi. You can also book treatments from a various selection, and watch as the stresses of life just float away. I had a great body massage and my sister in law had one amazing facial, so we both didn’t want to leave this place!

My treatment consisted in a personally-tailored massage with a blend of bespoke fusion of aromatherapy essential oils and plant extracts designed to relax, unwind and energise. The therapist asked me a few questions about my general well-being and met my every need in a tranquil but firm way. I felt really revitalised after my massage, and full of energy! My sister in law had one of the best facials with Decléor products for an ultimate vitamin glow. Her skin looked replenished and glowing with vitality.

For dinner we enjoyed award winning dishes prepared by Chef Kevin Barrett in an informal atmosphere. The menu reflects the changing seasons, making the most out of local ingredients. For starters I had an asparagus soup with dried tomato, and my guest had a smoked salmon tartar with avocado on top. Really fresh and tasty!  For mains we chose veal with mashed potato and broad beans, and salmon with purple mash and peas cream. The portions were quite big, fresh and done to perfection! For desserts we could only have room for bitter Chocolate Pave, chocolate cuilliere, raspberry crumble and chocolate toffee, which was divine. For wine aficionados, courses can be paired with wines from a cellar with over 300 bins and 30 by the glass!

Whether a hotel resident, visiting the hotel for a spa day, or you’re here to escape for a couple of days on a spa break, Donnington Valley’s Health Club and Spa is guaranteed to send you away feeling refreshed and more like the old you!
